What is Hardness?
Gemologically speaking, hardness refers to the likelihood of surface scratching. The Moh's Scale is used as a hardness reference in gemology. Toughness, or the tendency to break, is not the same as hardness and is measured in a separate scale. Materials will scratch any substance with a lower hardness scale measure on the scale of 1 to 10. We have included both common gem materials and household substances that jewelry commonly contacts in the Moh's Scale below.

1 Talc 6 Steel knife, Glass
2 Fingernail 7 Quartz varieties
3 Most Copper, Silver & Gold Alloys, and most pearls 8 Topaz
4 Fluorite 9 Ruby, Sapphire
5 Turquoise 10 Diamond

What is Toughness?
Gemologically speaking, toughness refers to the likelihood of breakage. Toughness is rated using a categorical scale of Poor, Fair, Good, or Exceptional. Stones with Good or Exceptional toughness will rarely break under normal jewelry wear and care conditions. Items with Poor or Fair toughness will require special care and handling to prevent breakage. These items should not be used in bracelets or rings that are more regularly bumped and battered in the course of normal daily activities. Necklaces and earrings should be fine as long as individuals are careful not to drop them on hard surfaces or expose them to any extreme conditions.
