Laboratory-grown stones have the same chemical composition and properties as mined gemstone equivalents. But, these stones are created without the environmental disruption and ethical uncertainties of earth mining. Lab-created stones are grown under controlled conditions with fewer contaminants than natural conditions. Chatham stones are all “gem quality” meaning they have fewer imperfections or inclusions. The finished products have greater color saturation and consistency than mined stones. Nonetheless, each stone is still unique

Chatham laboratory-grown stones come from one of the first innovators in created stones. Carroll Chatham began perfecting the process in the 1930’s. Today, Chatham labs have the best reputation for transparency and quality in the industry.

The process is much like making ice in your freezer compared to harvesting ice from a frozen lake. Both methods still give you ice, but the ice from your freezer is more consistent and is created more quickly in a controlled environment. Colored gemstone crystals from Chatham labs all start with a single natural mined crystal slice “seed” in a crucible chamber. The seed and the liquid ingredients needed for crystal growth are sealed in and heated to 1100 degrees Celsius. The crystal is left to grow in its natural shape for up to one year before the rough is harvested and inspected. Much of the rough does not make the grade. Only gem quality material is sent for cutting and sold under the Chatham name.

Chatham laboratory-grown sapphires and rubies are corundum stones with identical optical properties and characteristics as natural stones. The color intensity of these beauties is equivalent to the highest priced natural stones available, but at a fraction of the price. Corundum is one of the hardest, most durable stones available with a Mohs hardness of 9. So, sapphires and rubies are easy to set and care for.
