The Halstead Jewelry Residency Program provides office space and studio access to visiting jewelry artists for a period of one to four weeks. The residency is located in Prescott, Arizona. Applications are due September 30.

This jewelry artist residency is designed for jewelry artists or educators looking to further their careers. Set aside time for professional development & be inspired by the incredible landscapes in our area. This is a unique opportunity to spend time in a beautiful part of the country where few people get a chance to explore. An ideal retreat for our desert neighbors who want to escape the heat or metalsmiths from other parts of the country who want to experience the Southwest. Resident artists have access to private office space and our Halstead Headquarters jewelry studio during business hours. Use this residency time to develop a new collection, practice a new technique, work on your business plan, develop jewelry making class curriculums, prepare for an exhibition, or build your jewelry inventory. 

What is Included

  • Residency terms from 1 week up to 4 weeks maximum in the Halstead Headquarters building in Northern Arizona.
  • $250 supply stipend to spend with Halstead on jewelry making supplies
  • Jewelry studio, private office space, and internet access available Monday – Friday 8am - 5pm. Note that the studio is about a 20-minute drive from most lodging areas.
  • Meet & Greet introduction event or demo at the beginning of the residency with the Halstead Team
  • Casual photo shoot of you and your work in the studio
  • Feature posts on our social media during your residency

  • 1-hour collection critique with our Studio Coordinator, Sylvie Alusitz
  • 1-hour financial consult with our Director of Finance, Brad Scott
  • 1-hour business strategy consult with our President, Hilary Halstead Scott

Eligibility Requirements

  • Motivated metal jewelry artist with clear professional and/or creative goals to achieve during the residency
  • Training & safety awareness on all standard metalsmithing tools & equipment to be used in the studio. An initial safety check will be required.
  • Desire to build connections and community in the jewelry field
  • Financial resources to cover personal expenses for the duration of the residency
  • Applicants must already be citizens of the USA or hold a valid green card or travel visa for the duration of the residency. Halstead cannot sponsor or assist with US Visas.

Jewelry Studio

Access to the Halstead Headquarters shared jewelry studio is available during business hours Monday – Friday from 8am to 4pm. You are welcome to use the studio as much as you like during those hours. Studio access includes the use of all tools & equipment. It does not include materials & supplies. Resident artists should bring or buy their own materials.

•    Hand files
•    Sand paper and finishing paper
•    Flex shafts*
•    Basic hammers including: riveting, chasing, goldsmiths, and rawhide mallets
•    Misc additional hammers including - Fretz cross peen, ball peen, stamping, texturing, and more
•    Stone setting tools including: bezel pusher, prong pusher, brass rocker, tube setting punches
•    Misc flex shaft burs and polishing attachments
•    Dapping blocks
•    Bracelet bender
•    Ring mandrels
•    Bracelet mandrels
•    Acetylene/air torches with various tips
•    Butane torches
•    Anvil and steel bench blocks
•    Small sandbags
•    Misc stamps, including letter sets
•    Fretz micro forming stakes
•    Enameling kiln and limited enamels
•    Polishing machine
•    Rotary tumbler
•    Ultrasonic
•    Various pliers including: round nose, chain nose, flat nose, parallel, snips, crimp pliers, and more
•    Economy rolling mill and brass texture plates

•    Misc. Hand tools including: dividers, burnisher, miter jig, ring clamp, and more

•    Orion mPulse pulse arc welder

*Specialized or specific tools should be brought by the resident. Halstead cannot guarantee we will have specific bur types and sizes and flex shaft attachments. 

Office Space

The resident artist will have access to furnished private office space at Halstead Headquarters during the same business hours. Internet access is provided. A desk, chair, and some shelving are available. Please bring your own laptop, PC, or other devices.

What is Not Included

The following is a list of items that are not included in the residency. Residents should plan & budget for these expenses. 

  • Lodging – please research lodging options prior to applying for this residency. Lodging books early and can be quite expensive during peak seasons.
  • Travel expenses and arrangements
  • Local transportation. Note that public transportation is very limited in the area. A car is recommended.
  • Meals & food
  • Jewelry metals and other materials outside the supply stipend
  • Jewelry making instruction. Residents must be able to work independently in the studio and office space.
  • Wages or other compensation. Residents are not employees of Halstead.

  6. How do you plan to build connections and community in the jewelry field in the years ahead?
  7. Please provide a resume including your mailing address, complete education and work history as well as your jewelry skills, education & experience. Be sure to include social media and/or website accounts where we can see your body of work in jewelry.
  8. International applicants must provide a copy of a valid visa or green card that covers the residency period. We cannot sponsor applicants or assist with visa applications.

Terms of Participation

  • Access to office & studio space are provided with this residency. All other travel and living expenses are the resident's responsibility. Residents must plan for these expenses and have sufficient funds available to cover needs.
  • This residency includes a one-time $250 supply stipend but no additional compensation.
  • Use of jewelry studio facilities, tools, chemicals & equipment has inherent risks of injury. Residents are solely responsible for safe & appropriate use as well as adherence to safety protocols. Residents will not hold Halstead liable for any injuries that may occur in the studio or on the property.
  • Resident artists must respect the safe & professional working environment of Halstead employees. Unsafe or disruptive behaviors may result in early termination of residency access to facilities.
  • No smoking or vaping on the Halstead property 
  • Resident artists are not eligible to apply for the Halstead Grant
  • Resident artists may not access the warehouse and inventory areas of the building for security purposes
  • Resident artists are welcome to travel with any companions. But neither pets nor visitors will be permitted inside Halstead Headquarters.
  • Resident artists are not employees or contractors of Halstead. They are visiting guests.

Deadline & Schedule

Applications are due September 30. Please submit your preferred time of year and number of weeks for your residency. November and December are blackout months. 

About Prescott, Arizona

Prescott is located 2 hours north of Phoenix in the mountains of Northern Arizona. The town is over 5,000 feet in elevation. It is a popular getaway destination because of its natural beauty, iconic small-town charm, and proximity to some of Arizona’s most famous tourist sites. Prescott was the Territorial capital before Arizona became a state. It has a rich Western heritage. We are mighty proud of our cowboy roots, world famous annual rodeo, Whiskey Row saloons, and old west hospitality. Prescott is also a major outdoor sports destination. See below for a list of ways to enjoy the great outdoors. Please note that snowstorms are possible from late November through April. Visitors during those months should be prepared for winter weather.

The following towns in the Tri-City area are all about 20 minutes from the Halstead office building. These are your best locations to search for lodging.

  • Picturesque Prescott is surrounded by pine forests and boulders. Downtown features many local shops, galleries, & restaurants.
  • Prescott Valley is a modern suburb with many options for groceries, pharmacies, etc.
  • Rural Chino Valley has more limited amenities

The following destinations are recommended road trips during your time in Prescott:

  • 45 minutes to Jerome
  • 1.5 hours to Sedona
  • 1.5 hours to Flagstaff and historic Route 66
  • 2 hours to Phoenix and Old Town Scottsdale
  • 2.5 hours to the Grand Canyon

Travel Information

  • The closest major airport is Phoenix Sky Harbor which is a 2-hour drive.
  • There is a small airport in Prescott with limited flights available via SkyWest Airlines
  • Shuttle van transportation is available from the Phoenix airport to central locations in the Prescott area via Groome Transportation.
  • Uber, Lyft, and taxis serve the local area but can be limited during certain days and times
